Holiday Home Description

La Vieille Maison Holiday Home is located in the village of St Juire-Champgillon, only a 5 minute drive from Sainte Hermine which has many shops, restaurants and bakeries. In the summer, the town holds several fetes and festivals, and in August the village has its famous 'Hog Roast' - with music and eating until the small hours!

This house has been fully restored by the owners and has many original features on show - such as old oak beams and stone walls, as well as a large washing trough in the utility area. The house is entered via the gravel courtyard and has a cosy living room with TV, DVD Player and free-to-air satellite channels. The kitchen is fully equipped and the washing machine is in the separate utility area. Wi-Fi Internet access and a computer are also provided. Upstairs there are two good sized bedrooms - one with a double bed and the other with two single beds; both have en suite shower rooms.

Outside in the courtyard, there is a selection of tables and chairs for al fresco dining and a barbecue. The courtyard is securely fenced and gated and also contains the well-equipped games room (with PS2, games, dvd library, dressing up clothes and much more!)

The heated swimming pool is 12m x 7m and is fenced off from the main garden. There is also a paddling pool for younger children. It is shaded by three large walnut trees and has many sun loungers and picnic tables for relaxing. The main garden is over 5000m² and is laid to lawns and flower beds - very pretty in Spring & Summer!

The owners live on-site, so are often on hand to offer help and advice, as well as the odd glass of home made fruit liqueur!

This house is the ideal location for family get-togethers or groups of friends holidaying together. It can be rented by itself, or with the five bedroom holiday home on the other side of the courtyard - La Maison en Pierre.

St Juire and the Local Area

The pretty village of St Juire Champgillon is set in the Vendée countryside - surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat. In summer the village holds a weekly market on Sundays and the local restaurant - The St Georges - is open most days - serving a great set menu lunch for less than 15€ or a great à la carte menu in the evenings. The village also has a lavoir (ancient washing pool) and a donkey who loves to eat carrots!

The roads and country lanes around the village are safe for cycling and walking, and there are many sign-posted walks in the area.

The Puy du Fou Theme Park is only 40 minutes away and the forests and lake at Mervent are only 20 minutes away. The lake has its own beach and waterside cafes and restaurants, along with a zoo and water park in the forest.

The beaches of the Southern Vendée are around 45 minutes away and make a great day out! You can surf and bodyboard in the big waves at Les Conches, or relax on the long flat beach at Les Sables d'Olonne. The seafood restaurants along the coast are famous for their freshly caught ingredients and all have their own special dishes.

For a great day out - the coastal town of La Rochelle is worth the drive. It has arcaded shopping streets, a lovely old market hall and so many festivals and fetes throughout the summer months. Every evening the old port area is closed to traffic, and street entertainers amuse the passers by. There is a wide selection of restaurants and harbour-side cafés where you can watch the world go by.

Tim, Ella & Matt. April 2017
Thanks Jan & Mick for a perfect week. This was our first visit and we are impressed with the house, facilities, location and the weather - we were able to swim most days. Days out included Ile de Ré, Noirmoutier, Nantes (and the mechanical elephant) and Les Sables d'Olonne. We have thoroughly enjoyed our week and hope to return soon. The key element has been your hospitality. Thanks again.

Barry, Margaret, Lucy, Hugh & Hester. June 2017
We've had a blissful fortnight in La Vieille Maison. The house has everything a family could possibly need and the courtyard and grounds are beautiful. Hester was bowled over by the playroom and could have spent all day communing with the chickens. We loved La Rochelle - of course - and Luçon cathedral, with it's tranquil cloisters, is worth a visit. For sheer atmosphere, don't miss the Donjon at Bazoges - or the restaurant opposite, where the food is lovely and very reasonable. Thank you so much Jan & Mick for everything you did to make this a wonderful relaxing holiday.

Jim, Maria, Daniel & Robert, County Meath, Ireland. July 2017
Thank you so much for your kind hospitality, we really enjoyed our stay. The property is exceptional, the atmosphere relaxed and
welcoming, and we would recommend it to anyone. Best wishes to you both for the future. Go raith mile maith agat.

June & Ian
We had an exceptional and brilliant holiday in this lovely, well equipped gite. Thank you both for your wonderful hospitality, kindness
and all your suggestions & tips - particularly Puy du Fou. Best wishes for the future. P.S. We would highly recommend the St George restaurant in the village for drinks, lunch & dinner.
Andy, Paula & Arlo. Dorset June 2016
We had a wonderful week, staying at La Vielle Maison. Mick & Jan are excellent hosts and have got such a well thought out holiday experience that caters for everything, from the swimming pool to the kids playroom, the fresh eggs from the chickens to the fresh produce in their garden.
It truly is amazing. Massively recommend visiting Vouvant, a lovely little village with great photo opportunities. Think we may well be coming back here as it's such a wonderful place to stay and thanks to Mick & Jan for making us feel so welcome.

Jason, Bridgit, Annabel & Philippa. Berkshire. August 2015
We have had a lovely two weeks here with our two daughters. La Vielle Maison is a beautiful gite and so well equipped and comfortable. We have loved the pool and the chickens. Our children have turned into water babies!
We have enjoyed trips to La Rochelle, Puy du Fou, Parc Pierre Brun, Fontenay le Comte and just relaxing. We will be back soon and will definitely recommend you to our friends & family. Thank you for being so generous and friendly.

Amazing pool, great swings and games room that entertained us for the whole two weeks! Annabel (11)
My favourite things were the pool, collecting eggs and Jan's chocolate cake! Love from Philippa (8)

Nathan (7), & Joshiah (12). Oxon. July/August 2015
Thank you for letting us stay in your house. I have had a very nice time. (Thank you). You have been very kind to let us pick your vegetables, they are very nice. Your chickens are very nice and I bet the others liked them as well. It is a wonderful place for a holiday.
I have seen lots of lizards, they are very quick, so I could not catch one. The pool is very fun and we have had a very nice time. Lots of love, Nathan (7) & Joshiah (12). P.S And the others.

Simon & Julia. Oxon. July/August 2015
We have had the most wonderful holiday. Thanks to you both, Mick & Jan, for having such a lovely holiday home and being such wonderful hosts. We couldn't have asked for anything more and hope to re-visit. We'll tell all our friends & family. Goodluck for the future.

Steve, Caroline, Anna & Lizzie. New Maldon. July 2015
What an absolutely fantastic place! You’ve made us quite envious that you get to live here all the time. We had a lovely time and you cater for everything, not just with the facilities on site, but the eggs, fruit, vegetables….the list goes on. A wonderful way to start our holiday, incredibly relaxing and such generous hosts. I hope we’ll be back soon.
